Giving them new stuff is quicker if you use the Steal Skill.They do have a weight limit, so watch how much stuff you give them.You can control this to a limited extent, but it's safer to just give them something that's single-shot only. They love to use burst-mode, thus wasting ammo and very often hitting you and other party members.
